Oversize Package Surcharge vs. Over Maximum Limits Surcharge: Key Differences

The Oversize Package Surcharge applies when a package exceeds the DIM weight limit specified for each service, typically ranging from 70 to 90 lbs. Carriers will ship these oversized packages for an additional cost, which can range from $100 to $145 for the shipper.

Conversely, the Over Maximum Limits Surcharge (commonly referred to as the Unauthorized Package Surcharge) is applied to packages that exceed the unacceptable DIM weight limit, set at 150 lbs or more. Carriers reserve the right to refuse these packages entirely, meaning they will not be delivered to their intended destination. If a carrier chooses to accept an over-maximum package, the shipper will incur a significantly higher surcharge, starting at $1,150.
